Extracting coherent coda arrivals from cross-correlations of long period seismic waves during the Mount St. Helens 2004 eruption

چکیده
[1] We computed cross-correlations of seismic waves generated by Long-Period (LP) events in the frequency band [0.8–2.2 Hz]. The data were recorded in the vicinity of Mount St Helens (MSH) during an eruptive period from September to December 2004. The time symmetric coherent coda arrivals of the time-derivative of the cross-correlation function (DCF), resulting from scattering and topographic effects in MSH area, correspond to arrivals of the Green’s function (GF) between the two stations. The DCF waveforms computed on an hourly basis show a remarkable consistency over time periods of several hours but show temporal variations on longer time-scales. We investigated the emergence rate of the symmetric arrivals of the DCF and discussed their potential applications for volcano monitoring. Citation: Sabra, K. G., P. Roux, P. Gerstoft, W. A. An infrasound array study of Mount St. Helens
The ongoing activity of Mount St. Helens provides an opportunity to study the infrasonic wavefield produced by an active, silica-rich volcano. In late October 2004, as a pilot experiment for the Acoustic Surveillance for Hazardous Eruptions (ASHE) project, we deployed two infrasound arrays, each co-located with a broadband seismometer and weather station, to continuously record seismo-acoustic ...
متن کاملSeismic Imaging with the Mount St. Helens Node Array
The 900 instrument Mount St. Helens nodal array recorded continuous data for approximately two weeks in the summer of 2014 and was deployed contemporaneously with the active source component of the iMUSH experiment (imaging Magma Under St. Helens). Two distinct imaging methodologies are applied to node data 1) reverse time imaging (RTI) is used to automatically detect and locate microseismicity...
متن کاملGround - coupled acoustic airwaves from Mount St . Helens provide constraints on the May 18 , 1980 eruption
The May 18, 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption perturbed the atmosphere and generated atmosphere-to-ground coupled airwaves, which were recorded on at least 35 seismometers operated by the Pacific Northwest Seismograph Network (PNSN). From 102 distinct travel time picks we identify coherent airwaves crossing Washington State primarily to the north and east of the volcano. The travel time curves pro...
متن کاملLong-range correlations in the diffuse seismic coda.
The late seismic coda may contain coherent information about the elastic response of Earth. We computed the correlations of the seismic codas of 101 distant earthquakes recorded at stations that were tens of kilometers apart. By stacking cross-correlation functions of codas, we found a low-frequency coherent part in the diffuse field. The extracted pulses have the polarization characteristics a...
متن کاملA seismically constrained mass discharge rate for the initiation of the May 18, 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption
We calculate the vertical mass discharge rate from Mount St. Helens for the first few minutes of the May 18, 1980 cataclysmic eruption using a new method based on seismic constraints. The observed seismic waves indicate that the seismic source is a series of single forces. We model these forces as thrusts due to a combination of the momentum flux of the erupted products and the pressure of the ...
